South Korea developed a phosphor-free white LED

The Research Institute of Physics of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has successfully developed a technology for the production of phosphor-free white LEDs , which is expected to be used in next-generation lighting and displays.

Currently a large part of the white led blue led yellow phosphor in combination, in parallel or a plurality of colored LED producing white LED. However, the yellow phosphor is a rare earth substance, which must be imported, and has a low color rendering property and a possibility of discoloration. Combining multiple colors of LEDs is costly.

To solve this problem, the KAIST research team replaced the phosphor with a semiconductor chip. The pyramid structure with a concentric shape at the top is designed as a composite structure. Quantum Wells are formed on each side of the manufactured 3D structure under different conditions, each emitting a different color.

The research team explained that the time and conditions for manufacturing the 3D structure were adjusted to change the area of each crystal face to produce a multi-color mixed LED.

The research team also found a way to measure the degree of current injection inside a 3D structure using a high power microscope. LED component efficiency and color reproducibility can be adjusted by developing a method that can effectively inject current.

The R&D team said that in the future, the 3D semiconductor process can be developed to improve efficiency and produce a single-chip white light source with low cost and high color reproducibility without using phosphors. Relevant research results are published in the online edition of Nature: Science & Applications.
